We believe that all good theology is intensely practical and mission focused. With that in mind, all students undertake a placement alongside the course, and it is woven throughout each module on the course.

The placement approach is an integral part of the program. Through it we help to develop the practical effectiveness of students as Christian ministers or workers in other professions. This includes the following:

  • Introducing students to the variety of opportunities for Christian ministry and helping them to clarify their perception of their future calling
  • Helping students to discover, develop and put into practice their gifts and skills
  • Involving students in “hands-on” Christian Missional Ministry, especially among those from a different background. For example, general ministry experiences such as preaching, prayer meetings, team ministry, leading small groups, mission planning committees etc.
  • Giving students the opportunity to observe experienced Christian ministers on the job
  • Enabling students to reflect on their own practical experience in a fruitful way

What does a placement look like?

Placement typically takes place during term time of each academic year, and students are required to do 13 hours per week of placement work (6.5 hours if on the part-time course). Students are given a choice of a placement to work at: some are arranged with local churches and involve tasks which are intended to further the church’s work. Other placements link the students directly to local institutions, charities or community groups.

Examples are: Sunday school teaching, youth work, evangelistic outreach, pastoral visiting, support for homeless people. Students are encouraged to bring their theological and missiological understanding into both Christian and secular situations by participation in the work of these various organisations.

Students normally remain at a particular placement for the period of 1 year (full time course), but they can also stay at the same placement for the full three years (full time course).

Engagement and support during a placement

As part of the placement, students also have:

  • Personal Development Planning

    Every year you will create a portfolio, journal and log that track your formation and development.

  • Placement tasks

    You will do a number of placement tasks throughout each year, such as preaching, running events etc.

  • Regular Supervision

    A coach will meet you weekly for general supervision, support and development, as well as to arrange placement tasks.

  • Cluster

    You will meet for three hours per week with peers to reflect on each other’s placement experiences.
